Dr. Mathew Koech

Nephrologist Medical Educator Health Advocate Podcast Host

I became a doctor because I believe medicine is one of the most human things we can do for each other. I started this podcast because I believe that when doctors tell their stories, communities are empowered to take charge of their health.

Who I Am

A Doctor Who Believes in the Power of Stories

Dr. Mathew Koech is a nephrologist — a specialist in kidney diseases — with over 18 years of medical experience across Kenya and South Africa. He trained at some of the continent's most respected institutions and has dedicated his career to three interconnected missions: caring for patients with kidney disease, training the next generation of doctors, and making credible health information accessible to every community.

In 2016, Dr. Koech completed his nephrology subspecialty training at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University in Cape Town — one of Africa's foremost centres for kidney care.

Today, he teaches nephrology at Moi University School of Medicine, sees patients at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and runs a private practice at Oak Tree Centre and St Luke's Hospital.
